No one likes to consider the worst-case scenario happening at their place of business, schools, shopping centers or hospitals, but the truth is that parking lots and garages of all establishments can be hotbeds for negative activities.  Fortunately, this is Knightscope's number one use case and an area in which we provide tremendous value and measurable results.

USA Today reported a pattern of physical attacks on healthcare workers in parking garages, which we covered previously in a separate blog here.  We’ve heard many similar stories as healthcare organizations across the US signed contracts with Knightscope to make advancements in various critical areas of physical security and then subsequently reported their positive experiences back to us and rewarding us with their business for many years over.

Strengthening aviation security in the areas of anti-terrorism, physical security, and asset protection is critical in keeping the traveling public safe as we continue to face evolving threats, and any effective airport security program must consider the target-rich environment of thousands of cars being left unattended for days, weeks or even months.  ABM (NYSE: ABM), a leading provider of integrated facility services, is utilizing Knightscope technologies to monitor a major U.S. airport parking facility without any human intervention to gather and deliver unprecedented levels of data and actionable intelligence for the airport operations team to assist in making smarter, safer, and faster decisions.

Having now accumulated over 2,000,000 hours of real-world experience, Knightscope has amassed a wealth of knowledge that we can apply to our top recommendations to secure parking lots and parking structures.

STEP 1 Secure Parking Areas

Provide a consistent physical security presence for all employees, contractors, visitors or parking patrons by utilizing several Autonomous Security Robots (ASRs) for various parking applications.  Roving K5s can help reduce speeding vehicles, providing a safer environment for all pedestrians and other drivers.  And with their bright strobe lights and patrol sounds on, the robots can deter vagrant encroachment, trespassing and/or criminal behaviors.  In doing so, you will be aiding in the prevention of vehicle break-ins, vehicle thefts, catalytic converter thefts, and vandalism.  Additionally, visitors may press the distress button on any robot to activate the Intercom to summon emergency assistance or notify park staff.  Adding Knightscope’s K1 Blue Light Towers in remote areas of the parking lots or parking structures, with full wireless functionality and no digging or trenching requirement, provides highly visible and familiar points to access reliable communications that provide needed comfort when cell phone service is scarce, or the phone’s battery has died.

STEP 2 Monitor Entrances

A K1 Tower at each of the entrances to alert to both BOLO (Be-on-the-Lookout) for People, and or Signals along with clear signage that the area is being monitored can assist in crime deterrence. Through Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR), blacklisted vehicle Alerts can be generated for the end user via KSOC, email, text or voice. Facial Recognition can be leveraged to record Persons of Interest or Alert for BOLO’s returning to the premises. All of these detections can be a deterrence for banned individuals not allowed on the property. Messages can also be played through the robot on a programmed schedule or by People Detection Alerts to advise of parking lot hours, policies, or any other useful information.

STEP 3 Coverage for Critical Parking Levels or Areas

K1 Hemispheres can provide eye-level video of all activity at a specific location, such as near payment machines. K5’s can be actively patrolling crime or vagrant encroachment hot spots or ground levels of multi-level parking structures to provide more consistent physical presence for unwanted visitors entering on foot or in a vehicle while occasionally sweeping the upper levels for randomness and unpredictability. Thermal anomaly Alerts from K5 can indicate real time detections of high temps that may pose a risk in the parking lot or structure. And K1 Blue Light E-Phones placed near the stairwells can connect drivers with much needed assistance when there is a maintenance issue, flat tire or can’t find their vehicle

STEP 4 Manage the Workload

Utilize Knightscope as a stand-alone security service or augment your current security force. If choosing Knightscope, enhance the user experience by digging deeper in your machine’s capabilities through the Knightscope Security Operations Center (KSOC), or better yet, upgrade to Knightscope+ and allow us to take some of the workload off and we can do the remote monitoring on your behalf and escalate issues according to the agreed upon post orders.

Finding the appropriate technologies to create a more secure environment is key in better managing the parking experience.  Take a few moments to visit with one of our experts and discover how we can help harden the physical protection of your lots and structures.  Click here to learn more.
